Have Breastmilk, Will Travel!

July 20, 2007 by Amy Spangler | 6 questions or comments

The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has announced a policy change. Effective immediately, unlimited quantities of breastmilk will be permitted in the cabin of airplanes, regardless of whether a woman is traveling with or without an infant. Breastmilk will now be treated as “liquid medication.”

It may take several days or weeks for knowledge of the new policy to be widely disseminated, so in the meantime, breastfeeding mothers traveling with or without infants and transporting breastmilk might want to take a copy of the new policy with them.

Kudos to the TSA for recognizing the need to keep babies safe along with everyone else!

  1. Just a clarification. Breastmilk will be permitted without a child present effective Saturday, August 4. Until then current regulations will apply.

The delay is a procedural issue involving a required 15 day advance Congressional notification before initiating the change. For more information, visit www.tsa.gov.

  2. Thank you so much for the clarification and the policy change.

  3. For those of you who would like to view the new policy please visit the TSA website http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/sop/index.shtm. It’s refreshing to see breastmilk described in such appropriate terms, “liquid medication”!

  4. To be correct, the wording should be ‘any passenger’… not ‘mother’. Otherwise it’s discriminating, can easily be incorrect, plus can’t be verified, and shouldn’t have to be.

  5. An interesting point. Conceivably a grandmother could be transporting a young child along with expressed breastmilk. I’m sure there are other exceptions to the rule that could be identified. For now, I’m just happy to have the new “rule”. As exceptions arise, perhaps it is best to pursue them with the TSA.

  6. I hope you will join me in thanking the TSA for its recent policy change.
Please send your letters to TSA Administrator Kip Hawley, 601 S. 12th Street, Arlington, VA 22202.
