Breastfeeding: The First Hour - Save One Million Babies!

July 31, 2007 by Amy Spangler | one question or comment

Although many of us celebrate breastfeeding year-round, August 1-7 is set aside to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. Most communities celebrate the whole month of August, some areas celebrate in October when the weather is cooler.

Governors and mayors sign proclamations, newspapers run press releases, health departments host community-wide baby showers to highlight how important breastfeeding is to all of us.

One way to celebrate is by learning something new about breastfeeding - raising our own awareness, then sharing that info with someone else.

Some great resources for celebrating and learning include:

La Leche League (Check out LLLI’s new website and resources.)

Breast Crawl (A wonderful video from India showing a baby crawling to the breast right after birth.)

Kangaroo Mother Care (Read some of the research on the importance of skin-to-skin contact for mothers and babies.)

International Lactation Consultant Association (Send an eCard to your friends and colleagues to wish them a Happy World Breastfeeding Week!)

Celebrate breastfeeding - today and every day!
