How Safe is Your Baby’s Car Seat?

This little lesson in parenting was only reinforced when I received a recent email from MomsRising, explaining how many strollers, car seats and infant carriers have dangerous levels of toxic fire retardant chemicals.
That’s right. Even I had to read that twice before it sank it. I could very possibly be sitting my baby in a chemical-laden seat. The irony of it is that once she is securely strapped in, I’m supposed to worry less, not more.
But according to a study conducted by watchdog group, Friends of the Earth, 56 percent of infant carriers, 44 percent of car seats, and 40 percent of strollers tested as having dangerous levels of toxic fire retardant chemicals. What’s more, these very chemicals have been linked to serious health disorders such as cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption, reproductive, and brain dysfunction and learning disabilities.
I’d say that’s more than plenty reason to be concerned.
Thankfully, the silver lining may already have presented itself. Leading children’s products manufacturer. Graco, responded to the Friends of the Earth report the day it was published, saying they want to do the “right thing.” Graco has yet to commit to removing these chemicals from their products, but that’s where Moms Rising is taking the lead.
“Ask Graco, and other manufacturers of children’s products, to not use any more halogenated fire retardant products-period!” reads the email forwarded to MomsRising members, rallying concerned parents everywhere to sign a petition.
“If Graco gets rid of these chemicals, other baby product manufacturers will be under enormous pressure to follow suit,” the email continues.
So please, take a moment to sign up in support of safer baby and children’s products. After all, these products are meant to keep our children safe. Let’s do what we can to ensure that safety is all they are providing.
